Introduction: ACE Settle and area's energy group established Settle Energy Local Club following the creation of a Local Area Energy Plan in 2023. The club will be made up of consumers, generators and consumer/generator members and will use as much locally generated renewable energy as possible within the Club area shown on the map below.

Do you have solar panels or are you thinking of installing some? We will be using electricity generated from solar panels in the first years of the club, seeking to add some wind power in the future. If you have panels you may want to join as a consumer/generator. If you are thinking about installing solar panels have a look at this interactive map commissioned by ACE as part of the Local Area Energy Plan. Zoom in over your own building to assess your roof's potential and hover the mouse over to see the possible number of panels and annual output. It's not 100% accurate but gives a guide based on location, orientation of the roof and anticipated shading. Your next step would be getting a quote from a reputable installer which will include the expected generation.
You don't have to sell your exported electricity to the Club (in which case you would be a consumer member only) but the idea is to have as many people as possible generating so there is more local electricity to share around and lower everyone's bills. If you have older panels that benefit from a Feed-in-Tariff it is still possible to be a generator member of the Club. Please email the Club with your situation for detailed advice on your options: settle@energylocal.org.uk

Club launch: we are registered with the Financial Conduct Authority and our first generator came on stream in April when we welcomed our first consumer members.

Interested in joining the Club? We are now taking expressions of interest from both consumers and people able to generate electricity (usually from solar panels). To be a member you will:

  • need to live in the Settle, Giggleswick and Langcliffe electricity substation area which is the Settle Energy Local Club area (see map above).
  • be able to switch supplier to 100Green (formerly Green Energy UK) and accept their "deep green" tariff.  When you are not using locally-generated electricity this may be higher at certain times than typical standard domestic tariffs. Look at the details of the Match Tariff and Time Of Use Tariffs (see below).
  • have a smart meter (or be happy for one to be installed).

and to gain the most benefit you should consider shifting some of your peak electricity demand to times in the day when the sun is shining, at which times you will be eligible for the cheaper club rate.

(N.B. You should not be spending more than 10% of your income on energy bills or be in fuel poverty. Initially this is a pilot scheme, so we are looking to test the Energy Local concept locally to make sure it saves people money before we can roll it out on a larger scale).

What next? Register your 'expression of interest' in joining the club by clicking on the 'I am interested' button below. This will not commit you to anything and you can withdraw at anytime.

A word about gas: If you have a gas supply as well as electricity you can choose to receive your gas from 100Green or leave it with a separate supplier. 100Green supplies the gas network with gas from anaerobic digestion so buying it is sustainable. You can get tariff information by inputting your postcode to the 100Green website.  If you wish to check and switch to the cheapest gas we suggest you look at independent switching advice such as moneysavingexpert.com but remember most gas is a fossil fuel that contributes directly to climate change.
